Council on Foreign Relations Book Cites Importance of CCBA's Work
In a new (summer of 2004) Council on Foreign Relations book, "Climate Change - Debating America's Policy Options", author David Victor outlines the importance of efforts that reduce the greenhouse gas emissions coming from tropical deforestation. He goes on to say how, to that end, the United States Government could endorse the Climate, Community and Biodiversity Alliance.
"An expanded voluntary effort should include not just attention to emissions from the energy system but also changes in the use of land, which could help reduce the roughly one-quarter of world greenhouse gas emissions that come from tropical deforestation. [The United States] could endorse efforts such as those of an international coalition of leading American and European nongovernmental organizations (NGOs)-the Climate, Community, and Biodiversity Alliance-which has developed voluntary standards for projects that limit carbon while also helping to preserve biological diversity and improve local livelihoods." - from page 29 of the book.
David G. Victor is Director of the Program on Energy and Sustainable Development at Stanford University and adjunct senior fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations in New York.
